Google said that it would continue to maintain the VirusTotal online malware scanning tool and the VirusTotal team would be operating as an independent entity. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The VirusTotal service allows users to test files and sites for possible malware infections through an online scanning tool.

"VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. This is an exciting step forward," VirusTotal said. "Google has a long track record working to keep people safe online and we look forward to fighting the good fight together with them."
